Silver, Abba Hillel
(1893-1963)
   American Reform rabbi. He was born in Sirvintos, Lithuania, and was taken to the US in 1902. He served as a rabbi in Wheeling, Virginia, and Cleveland, Ohio. In 1938 he became chairman of the United Palestine Appeal and joint chairman of the United Jewish Appeal. He led the meetings of the American Zionist Emergency Council in 1943, and later was appointed chairman of the American section of the Jewish Agency. His writings include History of Messianic Speculation in Israel from the First Through the Seventeenth Centuries, The Democratic Impulse in Jewish History, Religion in a Changing World, Where Judaism Differed and Therefore Choose Life.
